A Trip Home

I came home to New Orleans for the week. It's been 7 months since Katrina passed through and devasted the area. My mom and dad are still having work done but all in all the house looks good. All the floors have been redone and walls have been painted, the roof has been replaced and in our neighborhood it really does look as if life will return in full force. However, today I went out to Mereax, a small town where my friend Konni and her family had lived for years, and I went into their house. It was absolutely horrible. The family room was just black and piled high with junk and mold and the grass was over grown. Everything was just destroyed. This was part of the city that not until sept 21 could people get into that neighborhood to even look. Katrina went through on Aug 28 in case you didn't know. However, there were people everywhere. Residents, volunteers, students, young and old working on houses. They are determined to come back to life. Although many of these houses were flooded for more than a month and covered in mold and oil they are returning already and will continue to until life is back as it should be.
